Top tips for first time boaters
I have never driven a boat before, how do I get started?
Most boats are much easier to operate than a car. All hire boat companies will spend on average two hours with you explaining everything you'll need to know.
Do I need to operate the locks myself?
Yes, the majority of locks on your journey along the Great Ouse will need to be operated by yourself.
All of the locks on the Great Ouse have now been electrified and you will require a navigation key to operate them. You will also require a windlass to operate the paddles. Both the key and paddles will be supplied by the boat hire company.
More information about the Great Ouse Locks can be found on the Lock Information pages.
Are there plenty of places to moor and tie up?
Your hire boat company should give you some advice on this before you set off. In general there are moorings at regular intervals along the river - some more obvious than others.
For more information visit our moorings page.
How fast can I go?
A number of speed limits apply throughout the navigation. The speed limit that exists on the Great Ouse vary between 6.4 kilometres per hour (4 mph) on busier sections of the river to 11.2 kilometres per hour (7 mph) elsewhere. On the tidal section of the river the speed limit is 24.1 kilometres per hour (15 mph).
You'll find a handy guide to the time it takes to get between the different locks at this speed in The River Great Ouse River Guide. You'll also need to allow about 15 minutes per lock as well.
What type of holiday should I take?
Take a self-drive boat if you are taking the family, are reasonably active, like to be independent and prefer a self-catering holiday. You don't need any previous boating experience or a licence. Your hire boat operator will have everything sorted for your trip and provide instruction on driving the boat, mooring and using locks.
Can I bring my pet?
Many hire boat companies will allow pets on board ranging from parrots and budgies to cats and dogs, either free or for a small charge. Always check with the company first though.
What do we need to bring with us?
The boats are very well equipped and will include crockery, pots and pans, kettle and linen. Normally you would be expected to bring personal items and towels. Check with the company to find out exactly what is provided on your boat.
Will my hire boat have electric sockets?
Don't worry you can plug in your mobile phone charger and hairdryer! Most boats will have one or more standard household sockets or cigarette lighter sockets onboard.
