Location and facilities at Relief Channel Lock

The Relief Channel was built in 1940 by Sir Murdoch MacDonald and Partners. It was built as a way to take the flood waters from the River Great Ouse.

This first attempt was unsuccessful and was revised in 1954. The size of the Relief Channel was increased and extended to join the tidal river upstream of Kings Lynn.

During times of flood the water can flow into the tidal Great Ouse at Denver to be diverted to Kings Lynn via the Relief Channel however this does not affect navigation.
