Relief Channel Lock

Location

Description

The Relief Channel was built in 1940, by Sir Murdoch MacDonald and Partners, as a way to take the flood waters from the Great Ouse. This first attempt was unsuccessful and was revised in 1954. The size of the Channel was increased and extended to join the tidal river upstream of King's Lynn. In times of flood the flow can either flow into the tidal Great Ouse at Denver ot be diverted to King's Lynn via the relief channel.
